The Grip
The importance of placing the hands in the correct position on the golf club cannot be over exaggerated. There is no such thing as the perfect grip, but there are certain factors when holding the club in an orthodox way, that have proved to be successful for the majority of players.
It is important that a V is formed on the right hand by the thumb and lower section of the forefinger pointing between the chin and the right shoulder and only two knuckles are visible on the left hand to the player.
The Set Up
The relevance of achieving the correct set up fundamentals cannot be underestimated. Aim, ball position, posture and weight distribution are all key elements in helping a player to hit the ball consistently and successfully towards the target.
- A good stance is important to a good swing
- Spread your feet about as wide as your shoulders
- Bend your knees slightly
- Bend forward from the waist at your hips so that your arms are hanging down
- Spread weight evenly on both feet
To achieve an orthodox square alignment at address a player must first line up the leading edge of the clubface square or at right angles to the target and then place their feet, knees, hips and shoulders parallel to this square clubface alignment
Ball Position
Ball position is of great importance, as the ball must be positioned so that a player contacts it at the optimum point in the swing arc. If the ball is positioned too far forward or too far backward then the chances of consistently striking the ball are reduced.
The position of the ball can vary with each club; in general the ball is moved back towards the middle of the stance if using a shorter iron. However, there is no one position to suit all golfers, some are content to keep the ball in one constant position in relation to their left heel.
The simplest technique to develop is probably where there is a fairly constant ball position, with the width of the stance varying as the right foot is positioned slightly wider the longer the club in use. As a guideline it is acceptable for irons to be played about 2in or 3in inside the left heel whereas woods will be the most effective if positioned either opposite or just inside the left heel.
Ball position may also need to be adjusted dependant upon the lie of the ball, for example if the ball was sitting on a bare lie it would be advisable to move it more towards the centre of the stance ensuring a crisp downward contact on the ball.
